First trench excavated at Backfields
Second trench excavated at Backfields
The excavation of three evaluation trenches, at the Backfields Industrial Estate, in St Paul’s was completed in July. The site was the location of Bristol’s first riding school, a large circular stables akin to an arena, established in 1761.
Limestone drain from the excavation in the second trench
The evaluation found limestone foundations related to the outer walls of the arena and a possible clay floor surface.
