Archaeology Day School

Each day school provides an introduction to an archaeological subject and combines presentations and tours with practical sessions and exercises. Sessions are led by experienced museum staff or archaeological professionals and include the chance to handle real archaeological objects.

Places are limited and must be booked in advance. All events are suitable for 16+.

If you are unable to attend a day school please contact us immediately. If we can fill your place your fee will be refunded (minus an admin fee of £10), otherwise courses are non-refundable. In the event Bristol Museum needs to cancel the session your place will be fully refunded and we will notify you immediately.

Join our team of archaeologists at St Nicholas Church to find out about recent excavations and projects in and around the city. Sessions will include a presentation from one of the project team and a chance to learn about some of the finds uncovered.

Archaeology Day School — An Introduction to Archaeological Methods

Discover the truth behind Time Team with the museum’s own field archaeologists. Find out about archaeological methods and techniques; get involved in the post excavation process; learn how an archaeological survey is carried out; and take an archaeological tour of Castle Park.

This session will be held at St Nicholas Church and in Castle Park. Please note: St Nicholas Church has restricted access and is not suitable for wheelchairs. The session in Castle Park will be outside and involve walking, please dress appropriately.

Castle Park Walks — One Thousand Years of Bristol History

This one-hour walk, led by a BaRAS archaeologist, looks at Castle Park from High Street to the eastern boundary of the castle site. Includes Bristol’s two oldest churches as well as the castle remains.

Visit Hogarth’s Triptych

Since 1973 St Nicholas Church has been home to a William Hogarth triptych painted for St Mary Redcliffe Church. The panels of the triptych comprise The Sealing of the Sepulchre (left panel), The Ascension (centre panel), and The Three Marys at the Tomb (right panel)

An Introduction to Human Remains

Find out how human remains are analysed in archaeology*. Learn how to age and sex skeletal remains; how to recognise evidence of disease and trauma; and discover what human remains can reveal about individual life histories and past populations.
