This year’s National Archaeology Week will be running from 12th–20th July 2008, and BaRAS archaeologists will be participating in Bristol’s event on Saturday, 19th July.
National Archaeology Week is a nationwide event co-ordinated by the Council for British Archaeology, and offers a unique opportunity for everybody to experience and explore the Britain’s archaeological heritage hands-on. In 2007, over 430 events took place throughout the UK.
Bristol’s event for 2008 takes place in Castle Park on Saturday 19th July. Local archaeologists from Bristol City Council, North Somerset Council, Bath and North-East Somerset Council, South Gloucestershire council, Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, and Bristol & Region Archaeological Services will be staging a series of day events entitled Archaeology in the Park.
During the event there will be guided timeline tours through the history of Bristol Castle with a chance to meet archaeologists who worked on the Keep excavation and see some of the finds from the dig. Part of the historic street layout that underlies the park will be laid out, and films about the history of Castle Park will be shown in the Vaulted Chambers, High Street
