2006 Achievements

After much hard work, we were delighted when our excavation at Portwall Lane managed, despite stiff competition from the world cup, to attract over 1000 visitors to the open day on the 13th May. We had even more reason to celebrate when the project was recognised and ìhighly commendedî in the biennial British Archaeological Awards ceremony for 2006 under the Current Archaeology Developer Funded Award category, which now sits, not a little smugly, on the wall in our office.

BaRAS opened its doors to the public for the annual Bristol Open Doors Day on the 9th September, and played host to over 1200 people who came to look at the building and a small exhibition about our work displaying some of the more interesting artefacts we have discovered.

In 2006 we successfully applied for registration with the Institute of Field Archaeologists. IFA registration means that we are now recognised as an approved organisation by the largest independent national institution for field archaeology in the UK, with a recognised code of conduct and professional standards.
